Aurora presents a special program with interdisciplinary artist Henry G. Sanchez revisiting his early-career exhibition Self Portrait (1990), for which he duplicated an oil painted self-portrait and displayed them throughout the downtown Houston nightclub, Homage. Sanchez will present recently discovered and newly edited archival footage of the exhibition (shot by video art pioneer Andy Mann) and its opening night variety show benefiting Lawndale Art and Performance Center (including appearances from actor Robin Jones, poet Eddie Gallaher, and artist Joel Orr) as well as a new, related live performance by Sanchez.

About The Artist:
Houston native Henry G. Sanchez has a decades-long career as an interdisciplinary and social practice artist. After moving to NYC in 1990, he exhibited widely within the NY-NJ metro area and internationally. Sanchez was noted for his video work and the ENGLISH KILLS PROJECT, a bio-art project proposing community-based bioremediation strategies for a polluted creek in Brooklyn, NYC. After returning to Houston in 2016, he created L.O.C.C.A.: Law Office Center for Citizenship and Art, based at his deceased father’s law office, where artists and social justice groups collaborated on public programs in the East End; and the BioArt Bayou-torium, a bilingual science lab and art studio in a shipment container situated on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. Sanchez has been awarded grants from the Houston Arts Alliance and The Idea Fund and was the 2022 Inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the Buffalo Bayou Partnership.
